Drinking Water Cases

Clean, safe drinking water is a basic human right-but for far too many Louisiana residents, especially in rural communities, that right is in jeopardy. Across the state, aging and inadequate infrastructure has left drinking water systems vulnerable to contamination, unsafe levels of chemicals and bacteria, low to no water pressure and chronic underperformance.
At the Law Offices of Kenneth W. DeJean, we are committed to holding accountable the parties responsible for providing-and failing to provide-safe drinking water. If you or a loved one has suffered health issues, inconvenience, or financial loss due to water that is contaminated, discolored and/or has a foul odor, we're here to fight for the justice and compensation you deserve.

The Problem: Failing Infrastructure and Poor Oversight

Many of Louisiana's drinking water systems, particularly in rural areas, rely on outdated equipment, underfunded maintenance, and insufficient oversight. This leads to a dangerous combination of frequent boil advisories, long-term exposure to harmful contaminants, and systemic neglect. Water sources may contain:

  • Lead and heavy metals from corroding pipes
  • Excessive and unsafe levels of arsenic and other contaminants.
  • Excessive levels of iron or manganese in the water.
  • Harmful bacteria like E. coli
  • Excessive levels of disinfection byproducts
  • Industrial and agricultural runoff

How Bad Is It? The Water Grades Tell the Story

In 2021, the Louisiana Department of Health began issuing Water System Grades to provide transparency about the condition and safety of public water systems across the state. These grades-ranging from A to F-take into account factors like infrastructure, compliance with health standards, financial sustainability, and operational effectiveness.
Unfortunately, many Louisiana water systems have received failing or near-failing grades, highlighting the severity of the crisis.

Your Legal Rights

When public water providers fail to meet safety standards and/or fail to provide potable drinking water to their customers, they must be held accountable. Whether you're suffering from health problems, inconvenience, increased expenses for having to buy bottled water for drinking and cooking or are simply tired of paying a monthly water bill for something (potable water) that you are not getting, you may be entitled to compensation.
